Many have theorized over the numbers. Analysts at Cowen and Company recently came out with projections for the sale of the Kindle 2 and the Kindle DX.

Most notably, they predict that just under 10% of Amazon’s U.S. customer base will be purchasing Kindle items by the year 2013.

Will you be one of that 10% by 2013? Are you a Kindle owner now?

How is the Kindle DX being received? What do people think of it? Here are a few very interesting comments from new owners (from the Kindle DX customer review section at Amazon):

The DX was not an obvious upgrade for me, but two features put me over the edge: the larger screen, and the native PDF reader. I now have the DX in my hands… Overall, the DX feels more like text and less like device and comes closer to the stated goal of the Kindle: for the device to disappear, leaving only the joy of reading.
(Alexander Sherr)

Reading on the Kindle DX vs 6″ readers is like the difference between sleeping in a King sized bed vs a Twin Bed (N. Jenkins)

I’ve tried loading my PDF documents onto my Kindle 1, but they won’t display. I couldn’t believe my eyes when I loaded my PDFs onto the Kindle DX. The formatting of the page displayed perfectly!!! Zooming and rotating was simple. (David Edmiston)

I decided to enjoy some midwestern spring weather this morning and went for a long walk. I left the iPod at home and chose to just clear my mind while I walked. We are lucky to have a paved trail at a nearby park which circles a large lake. It’s a great place to just let your mind wander.

While I walked I contemplated why Amazon would be coming out with a new Kindle (a Kindle 3 ?) so soon after the release of Kindle 2. The Kindle 2 has barely been out for two months (started shipping February 24, 2009 ). It just does not make much sense for Amazon to come out with an entirely new product. Amazon put a lot of work into improving on the Kindle 1, incurred design costs, and has set up manufacturing for the new Kindle 2.0. Why go to a new product already?

It leaves me to wonder what kind of product this Kindle 3 will actually be? Will it be an improved Kindle 2 (already?!) or will it be a whole different animal? Rumor has it that the screen will be larger to accommodate reading periodicals. And other rumors put the Kindle 3 as a partnership of some kind between Amazon and the New York Times. And even more rumors are circulating about the possibility of student textbook availability on the Kindle 3.

While no one really knows quite what to expect (we’re all speculating at this point), it will be very interesting to see if the new Kindle 3 will be an improved Kindle 2 or a device all its own. We should all get some news on Wednesday when Amazon is expected to unveil its new Kindle 3. Wednesday will be an exciting day for Kindle lovers everywhere!

Can Amazon save the print media business with the release of a bigger Kindle, the Kindle 3? It seems like they are going to give it a shot. A recent invitation to a Amazon press conference has everyone conjecturing that the Kindle 3 release is much closer than anyone thought – perhaps even this week.

Amazon sent out the following invitation to a select group:
“We’d like to invite you to an Amazon.com press conference scheduled for Wednesday, May 6 at 10:30 am ET. The press conference is scheduled to take place at the Michael Schimmel Center for the Arts at Pace University, located at 3 Spruce Street, New York City. Doors will open for registration at 9:30 am ET.” (Peter Kafka of Media Memo)

And The New York Times reports, “As early as this week, according to people briefed on the online retailer’s plans, Amazon will introduce a larger version of its Kindle wireless device tailored for displaying newspapers, magazines and perhaps textbooks.”

It is rumored that the screen will be larger to accomodate print media. And the possible addition of student texts would make the Kindle 3 a hot seller for the younger market. The price of the new device is still unknown. Will they bring the SD card slot back? And will color makes its debut on the Kindle 3? We will have to wait until Wednesday to find out!
