Will Amazon actually come out with a Kindle 3?
I decided to enjoy some midwestern spring weather this morning and went for a long walk. I left the iPod at home and
chose to just clear my mind while I walked. We are lucky to have a paved trail at a nearby park which circles a large lake. It’s a great place to just let your mind wander.![]()
While I walked I contemplated why Amazon would be coming out with a new Kindle (a Kindle 3 ?) so soon after the release of Kindle 2. The Kindle 2 has barely been out for two months (started shipping February 24, 2009 ). It just does not make much sense for Amazon to come out with an entirely new product. Amazon put a lot of work into improving on the Kindle 1, incurred design costs, and has set up manufacturing for the new Kindle 2.0. Why go to a new product already?
It leaves me to wonder what kind of product this Kindle 3 will actually be? Will it be an improved Kindle 2 (already?!) or will it be a whole different animal? Rumor has it that the screen will be larger to accommodate reading periodicals. And other rumors put the Kindle 3 as a partnership of some kind between Amazon and the New York Times. And even more rumors are circulating about the possibility of student textbook availability on the Kindle 3.
While no one really knows quite what to expect (we’re all speculating at this point), it will be very interesting to see if the new Kindle 3 will be an improved Kindle 2 or a device all its own. We should all get some news on Wednesday when Amazon is expected to unveil its new Kindle 3. Wednesday will be an exciting day for Kindle lovers everywhere!
